Royal Caribbean Returns to Labadee Haiti

Posted by thetraveldoctor on January 23, 2010

Royal Caribbean Ship at anchor at Labadee, Haiti

Royal Caribbean returned to Labadee Haiti this past week. It was the first time the Royal Caribbean ships have stopped at Labadee since the devastating earthquake leveled Port au Prince on January 12, 2010.  Labadee is Royal Caribbean’s private resort and is located on the northern coast of Haiti. The Labadee resort area did not sustain any damage from the earthquake and was able to reopen to passengers of Royal Caribbean cruise line this past week.

Royal Caribbean has taken some criticism since returning passengers to the Resort. I for one applaud the company for bringing tourist back to this country that urgently needs the money. Royal Caribbean has pledged one million dollars toward the relief effort in Haiti. And with the return of the ships to Labadee brings urgently needed supplies and food for the people of Haiti. Royal Caribbean is using every ship in it’s fleet that calls on Labadee as a supply ship for the relief effort bringing much needed food, supplies and personnel. Royal Caribbean has contributed the largest proportion of tourist revenue to Haiti since 1986, employing 300 locals and allowing another 200  locals to sell their wares in the native market within the resort. Royal Caribbean pays the Haitian Government $6 (US) per passenger that arrives on their ships to Labadee. This means that a Voyager Class ship that holds 3114 passenger pays a total of $18,684 per visit. There are at least 3 ship visits per week at $18,684 equals $56,052.00 per week. Plus all the money the passengers spend at the native market, Royal Caribbean is pumping hundreds of thousands of dollars into Haiti every month. And they have been doing this since 1986!

More than any other company in the United States, Royal Caribbean has been helping Haiti for over 20 years. So the next time you hear one of these pompous radio talk show host beating up on Royal Caribbean for bringing tourist back to Labadee, ask yourself, what has that talk show host done for the people of Haiti before or even after the earthquake? Some food for thought.

Great Restaurant in San Antonio-Central Park Pizza of N.Y.

Central Park Pizza of NY in San Antonio Texas

Central Park Pizza of NY in San Antonio Texas

When I was in San Antonio Texas this past December, I stumbled upon a great little Pizza & Pasta Restaurant. My wife and I were walking around the Downtown area just sightseeing and we found “Central Park Pizza Of N.Y. off the Main Plaza about a half block west of the Riverwalk on Main Plaza.

We were getting hungry and it was about 1PM so we decided to go into the Central Park Pizza Of N.Y. Restaurant. Upon entering you are greeted by a very basic sit down area with very basic wood tables that seat from 2 to 4 people and painted walls that remind you of New York. You continue toward the back where you place your order. They have a young, friendly and very accommodating staff that made us feel welcome.  There is a large menu board with all the offerings above the order area. They have everything from Pizza and Pasta to Hot Sub Sandwiches and Salads. The prices are very reasonable. You can get a 14” Cheese Pizza for $9.99 or one of their specialty Pizzas for $12.99 or the “ Central Park Special for $15.99. They also have daily specials, which I had. For $6.99 I had the Baked Ziti, which is served with Garlic bread and a drink. It was some of the best Baked Ziti I have ever had. My wife had the Three Cheese Calzone, which was also delicious. If you want a great  Hot Sub, for $5.50 you can have a Hot Sub Sandwich with chips and a drink.

So if you want a good meal for a great price, and you are in San Antonio you have to try Central Park Pizza of N.Y. at 136 Main Plaza in San Antonio. You won’t be disappointed.

Governor Blagojevich Poll

Posted by thetraveldoctor on December 20, 2008

With all that is going on in Illinois Politics, I thought it was time to ask the people if the Governor of Illinois should resign. He serves at the pleasure of the people and we have to tell him if he should stay in office or leave for the good of the state of Illinois. Vote and I will forward the poll results to the Lt. Governor.

Southwest to Launch Minneapolis flights from Chicago

Southwest Airlines announced on Wednesday that it will launch new service between Chicago Midway and Minneapolis St. Paul beginning in March. Southwest is moving into the Minneapolis St. Paul market right at the time that Northwest and Delta are expected to merge. This merger is expected to reduce service for Northwest at Minneapolis.

Southwest is a great carrier and then know what they are doing. They would not launch service into a new market if they didn’t think they could make a profit. The Minneapolis market needs a good low cost carrier as fares to that city have been very high and with the entry of Southwest, it will bring fares down in the market.

Southwest plans to release more details about the Minneapolis service in the coming months.

The House of Morons – US House Fails to Save Our Economy!

Posted by thetraveldoctor on September 29, 2008

The US House where the Vote Failed!

The US House where the Vote Failed!

I need to take a moment to vent my frustration regarding the failed vote for the US bailout plan today (Monday Sept 29, 2008). I have always had faith in our government that in the end, they would do the right thing. Well, today they didn’t. They let the entire United States and the World down. While they were fighting about a 700 billion bailout package, the market tanked. And because of the drop in the market, instead of the taxpayers shouldering a 700 billion bailout package, they were hit with a LOSS of 1 Trillion dollars. That’s right ONE TRILLION DOLLARS! This effects the elderly, the middle class, the poor, everyone in the United States.

Here is what the Congress did today. They had a train wreck and they showed up at the scene. There were people hurt and dying and instead of treating the people, they decided to let them all die and they walked away. What the Congress in effect did today was kill the economy world wide. What a bunch of Morons. Do they need to get a good slap up the side of the head? What is wrong with them?

What you need to do first thing on Tuesday morning is call your congress person and tell them to get it together and pass the bailout before there is nothing left to bailout! Tell them if they don’t pass it, then you won’t vote for them ever again.

This has really, really, really upset me, because it is going to hurt the very people these congressmen say they want to help. They just DON’T GET IT!!!!!

GET IT DONE MORONS! AND GET IT DONE NOW!!

Delta is partnering with GoGo Internet service. The cost of surfing on Delta will be $10 on flights 3 hours or less. $13 on flights over 3 hours. The only thing you will not be able to do is make phone calls on the net with a service such as skype.

When You “Got to Go!” There is Help…..

Posted by thetraveldoctor on August 12, 2008

If you travel for business or pleasure, there comes a point in your day when you “Got to Go!” Yes that’s right, you have to find a toilet and you are in a strange city and you need one BAD! What do you do? Well fear not anymore, I found this great website that works on your mobile phone. It’s called MizPee and it will direct you to the closest toilet in the area. Just go to http://www.mizpee.com on your mobile browser, click on “Find toilet” then input your location and click “Find” and presto! a list of Toilets near your current location pops up. This can be a real life saver when you are on the GO! (no pun intended).

Check it out and let me know if it worked for you. It has worked for me, thank goodness!

I have been sailing with Royal Caribbean since the late 70’s. I am always look for ways to save money and take as many cruises as possible. You may not know that Royal Caribbean offers Senior Citizen fares for people 55 years of age and older. Now these reduced fares are not available on all ships on all sailings but the sailings they do offer them on can save you hundreds of dollars. If you book your cruise through a travel agent that knows their cruises, they can help you save big bucks. If you want to save $300 to $500 per person, look into the Senior Fares on Royal Caribbean. You can check out the senior deals at www. royalcaribbean.com and maybe I will see you on your next Royal Caribbean Cruise!

An American Airlines jet in route to Honolulu Hawaii had to turn around over the Pacific Ocean and make an emergency landing at Los Angeles on Tuesday.

The Pilot reported smoke in the cockpit and requested clearance to return to Los Angeles. The plane was about 1 hour into the flight. The aircraft landed safely at LAX and passengers and crew evacuated through the aircraft’s inflatable chutes.

The cause of the smoke is still under investigation.
